Ginkgo Biosecurity, a leading company in bio-surveillance, biosecurity, and public health, is working with the government to improve the detection of new and emerging health threats at Botswana’s borders.
The pathogen monitoring program will begin at important entry points, starting with Sir Seretse Khama International Airport in Gaborone. The program will then expand to the Kazungula One Stop Border Posta in Kasane. Additionally, wastewater samples will be collected at the Botswana Meat Commission abattoir in Lobatse.
Travelers arriving by air will have the opportunity to participate upon disembarking, while those arriving by road at the Kazungula One Stop Border Post can provide samples at the entry point. The process is designed to be quick, efficient, and non-intrusive, allowing volunteers to provide samples easily upon arrival. Although participation in this initiative is entirely voluntary, travelers are strongly encouraged to take part. Early detection of pathogens is crucial for protecting the health of all citizens, visitors, and residents of Botswana. Importantly, all samples collected will be kept anonymous to protect individual privacy.
The data collected from these samples will be vital in strengthening Botswana’s health system and improving its response to public health threats and emergencies. This initiative demonstrates the Ministry of Health’s strong commitment to maintaining a high standard of public health and ensuring that Botswana remains an important player in global health. By participating in this program, individuals can help detect and manage potential health threats early, ensuring the well-being of the entire community.
